What is Affiliate Marketing?
"Affiliate Marketing" is a term used to describe online marketing strategy and it is an industry that has grown significantly in popularity and size since the late 1990's.
In Affiliate Marketing, a merchant (also called an advertiser) partners with affiliates (also called a publisher). The affiliates act as virtual salespeople for the merchant.
Using a variety of online marketing methods including search marketing, pay-per-click search marketing, email marketing, blogging, social marketing and so on... affiliates send visitors to the merchant's website.
When the referred visitors complete an action at the merchant's site (like making a purchase, or filling out a lead form) the merchant pays the referring affiliate a commission.
Here's an example of how Affiliate Marketing works:
Bill has a website about recipes and cooking. He signs up for the affiliate program at Pretend-Kitchen-Site.com.
On Bill's "famous bread" recipe page, he lists a baking pan, rolling pin and wooden spoon all available at Pretend-Kitchen-Site.com. He lets his readers know that they can get the items there, and adds encoded links to each of the products that he has obtained from Pretend-Kitchen-Site.com's affiliate administration panel.
When Bill's visitors click on those links and purchase those products, Bill earns a commission equal to a percentage of the sale price.
The Merchant-Affiliate relationships are facilitated with the use of affiliate tracking and management platforms. These technology and service platforms allow merchants to manage affiliates, track their activities and properly account for their commissions. They also give affiliates a place to review stats, obtain linking material and communicate with their merchant.
